Some days everything rocks. Your lifts feel good, your work capacity is through the roof and all in all you feel like a rockstar in the gym. Whilst these days are great, are they really the days that make us improve the most?
Some days suck. The weight is heavy, your legs feel slow, you can’t get your breathing right. The barbell and your body feel unbalanced and every lift you do feels progressively worse. You want to give up, go home and think about anything but how bad the gym feels today.
Consider this. The days that suck so bad that you want to go home are the ones we get the most out of. When a muscle meets resistance and overcomes, the muscle gets stronger. When a human meets resistance and overcomes, the human gets stronger. Be it mental or physical, when we meet resistance and overcome the challenge that it provides we are inevitably going to get stronger.
So on those days where everything sucks keep that thought in the back of your mind. Don’t get down on yourself. Attack the work with the comforting thought that this WOD or lift, no matter how hard it feels, is making you stronger. Mentally and Physically you are going to grow. On the days where you are a rockstar, remember that it was the hard days, the sucky days, the ugly days where you persevered and struggled through that have set the scene for the greatness you are feeling right now.
Embrace the struggle, get the work done and I promise, you will become more of a rockstar with every challenge you stare down and overcome.
